Avanti

Location: 7 miles off Anvil Point
Description: Danish steamship
Length: 272ft
Depth: 42 metres
Sunk: 2 February 1918

This steamship was sailing from Bilbao to West Harlepool when a German submarine UB-55 fired a torpedo into her and it is believed she sunk within 2 minutes of the explosion. There were only 2 survivors from her crew of 24.

She is well endowed with portholes and other fittings as well as a large gun on her stern and the rudder stock which projects upwards, high above the deck. Amidships, her bridge and accommodation have collapsed around her two boilers and three-cylinder triple-expansion engine.

Although twisted, she is mainly upright
